This policy explains what personal data ConsumersNG collects when you use consumersng.com, why we collect it, who we share it with, how long we keep it and the rights you have. We follow the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA) and, for readers outside Nigeria, aim to meet the standards of comparable laws such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Who we are
ConsumersNG is published by Daytasolutions Technologies Ltd, a company registered in Nigeria with the Corporate Affairs Commission (RC 9776679). Daytasolutions Technologies Ltd is the data controller for personal data collected through this website, which means we decide how and why it is used.
For any privacy question or request, email support@consumersng.com.
The short version
- You can read everything on ConsumersNG without creating an account or giving us your name.
- We collect personal data only when you contact us or comment, plus basic technical data every website receives.
- We do not sell your personal data.
- You can ask us to show, correct or delete the data we hold about you at any time.
What we collect and why
When you contact us. If you use our contact form or email us, we receive your name, email address and message. We use them only to reply to you and deal with your request. The contact form sends your message to our email inbox; it is not stored on the website. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering readers, or taking steps you have asked for.
When you comment. If you leave a comment, we collect the name, email address and (optional) website you enter, your comment, your IP address and your browser type. The IP address and browser type help us block spam and abuse. Your email address is never shown publicly. Legal basis: your consent when you choose to comment, and our legitimate interest in keeping the comments section free of spam and abuse.
Comments may be checked by Gravatar, a service run by Automattic Inc., to show your profile picture if you have one. Gravatar receives a coded version (a hash) of your email address, not the address itself. Gravatar’s privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy.
When you visit any page. Like every website, our hosting servers automatically record technical information such as your IP address, browser, device type, the page you asked for and the time. This is needed to deliver pages to you, keep the site secure and fix problems. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure website.
Article view counts. We count how many times each article is opened, to show our most-read stories. The count is a single number per article; it does not record who you are.
Analytics and advertising (when used). We may use analytics tools to understand which content readers find useful, and advertising (such as Google AdSense) to fund our free content. These services can collect device identifiers, IP addresses and browsing information through cookies. Where the law requires it, we will ask for your consent before they are used. Legal basis: your consent, or our legitimate interest in measuring and funding our work where consent is not required.
Cookies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. ConsumersNG uses them as follows:
- Comment cookies: only if you tick the box to save your details when commenting, so you do not have to type them again. They last about a year.
- Login cookies: only for our editors when they sign in to manage the site.
- Video cookies: videos are embedded from YouTube in privacy-enhanced mode, so YouTube sets no cookies unless you press play.
- Analytics and advertising cookies: only if and when we use these services, as described above.
When we show ads, third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits. You can turn off personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info, and read how Google uses data from partner sites.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The website will still work, although you may need to re-enter your details when commenting.
Who we share data with
We do not sell or rent your personal data. We share it only with:
- service providers that run the website for us, such as our web hosting company and email provider, who may only use it to provide their service to us;
- Gravatar, as described above, when you comment;
- analytics and advertising partners, if and when we use them;
- the police, courts or regulators, when the law requires us to.
Data stored outside Nigeria
Some of our service providers, including our web hosting, email and Google services, store data on servers outside Nigeria, for example in the United States or Europe. When this happens we rely on the safeguards the NDPA allows, such as the provider’s contractual commitments to protect personal data to a standard comparable to Nigerian law.
How long we keep it
- Messages to us: up to two years after our last exchange, then deleted.
- Comments: for as long as the comment is published. Comments marked as spam are deleted regularly.
- Server records: for the short period set by our hosting provider for security and troubleshooting.
- Analytics and advertising data: as set by those providers, where used.
Your rights
Under the NDPA, and similar laws elsewhere, you have the right to:
- know what personal data we hold about you and get a copy;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data deleted, for example by asking us to remove a comment;
- restrict or object to how we use your data;
- receive your data in a common format so you can move it elsewhere (data portability);
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting what was done before;
- not be subject to decisions about you made only by automated means. We make no such decisions about readers.
To use any of these rights, email support@consumersng.com. We will reply within 30 days and may ask you to confirm your identity first. There is no charge.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) at ndpc.gov.ng, or to the data protection authority in your own country.
People mentioned in our articles
Our research briefs report on public matters affecting consumers. They may name public officials, companies and people who have spoken publicly, based on published reports, official statements and other sources we cite. We process this information for journalistic and public-interest purposes. If you are named in an article and believe something is inaccurate or out of date, email support@consumersng.com and we will review it promptly and correct it where needed.
We use artificial intelligence tools to help research and draft articles from published sources. Every article is reviewed by an editor before publication. No reader data is used for this.
Children
ConsumersNG is written for adults and is not directed at children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
The whole website uses an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Access to the site’s management area is limited to our editors and protected by passwords. No website can be completely secure, but if a breach puts your personal data at risk, we will notify the Nigeria Data Protection Commission within 72 hours as the NDPA requires, and tell you without undue delay where there is a high risk to you.
Links to other websites
Our articles link to the news outlets, regulators and other sources we cite, and our share buttons link to social networks. Those websites have their own privacy policies; we are not responsible for how they handle your data. The share buttons are plain links: the social network receives nothing from us unless you click one.
Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when our practices change, for example when we start using analytics or advertising. The date at the top shows when it was last changed. For significant changes, we will also post a notice on the website.
