ConsumersNG helps Nigerians understand the news that affects their money, their rights and their daily lives, and what they can do about it.
Why we exist
Every week brings decisions that land in your pocket: a new fuel price, a change in bank charges, a tariff review, a health insurance policy, a fresh scam doing the rounds. The news about them is often scattered across many outlets, reported differently by each, and written for insiders rather than for the people who have to live with the result.
We started ConsumersNG to close that gap. Instead of adding one more headline, we bring the reporting together, check it against what regulators and official bodies have actually said, and explain it in plain English for the person at the pump, at the bank counter or on the phone with customer care.
What you get in every brief
Each ConsumersNG brief follows the same structure, so you always know where to look:
- What’s happening: the story in a few short paragraphs, with names, dates and figures explained.
- What the sources say: how each news outlet reported it, with a link to every one.
- Where they agree and where they differ: we show disagreements and conflicting figures openly instead of picking a side quietly.
- What the authorities say: the position of the regulator or government body responsible.
- What it means for you: the practical effect on your costs, choices and rights.
- What you can do: clear steps, such as what to check, who to complain to and what to keep as evidence.
- What is still unclear: the questions nobody has answered yet, so you know the limits of what is known.
- ConsumersNG’s view: our own opinion, clearly labelled and kept separate from the reporting.
How we choose and check stories
- Several sources, not one. We only write a brief when at least two independent, established outlets are reporting a story, or when a regulator or official body has made a statement.
- Officials count for more. Statements from regulators such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) carry more weight in how we rank and report a story.
- Most-covered first. Stories backed by more independent sources rise to the top.
- Everything is linked. Every claim comes from a source you can open and read for yourself.
- An editor approves everything. We use artificial intelligence tools to monitor sources and prepare first drafts, but nothing is published until an editor has reviewed it. Read more in our Editorial Policy.
What we cover
- Scam alerts: fraud, fake investment schemes and impersonation warnings.
- Consumer rights: your rights as a customer, refunds, complaints and how to get them resolved.
- Finance: banking, fintech, loans, pensions and personal money decisions.
- Economy and prices: fuel, food, inflation and the cost of living.
- Tech and telecoms: data, airtime, network quality and digital services.
- Power: electricity tariffs, metering and supply.
- Food and health: health insurance, drug prices, product safety and recalls.
- Business and entrepreneurs: what changes in the market mean for small businesses and their customers.
What we are not
We are not a regulator and cannot resolve complaints against companies, but we can point you to the people who can. We are consumer researchers, not financial advisers, lawyers or medical professionals: our briefs, including the steps under “What you can do”, are general information to help you understand an issue, not professional advice. For decisions about your money, health or legal rights, check with the relevant regulator or a qualified professional. See our Disclaimer. We are independent: advertising never decides what we cover or what we say, and any sponsored content will always be clearly labelled.
Get involved
- Tell us what is affecting you. A price rise, a poor service, a policy you do not understand: send it to us and we may research it.
- Report a scam. Warnings from readers help protect others.
- Spot a mistake? Tell us and we will check it and correct it openly.
- Follow us on X and Facebook at @Theconsumersng for new briefs as they are published.
